The Gospel According to Luke - Luke 10:38-42

23 November 2025

The sermon reflects on the story of Martha and Mary as a lesson about how to receive Jesus rightly. It argues that the passage is not a simple contrast between serving and sitting still, but a warning about how distraction, self-focus, and anxiety can pull people away from Christ. Martha’s problem was not her work itself, but that her service became restless and centered on herself rather than on Jesus.

In contrast, Mary is presented as devoted, centered on Christ, and at rest as she listens to his word. The sermon’s main hope is that people do not make themselves peaceful by trying harder, but by first receiving Jesus as the true host who serves them. Through his word, his death, and his grace, Jesus forgives sin, gives a new heart, and offers the deep rest and satisfaction the world cannot provide.
