The Gospel According to Luke - Luke 12:49-59
23 March 2026
The sermon explores a difficult passage in Luke where Jesus speaks of bringing fire, baptism, and division. It explains that Jesus is describing both the holiness of God that judges sin and the mercy of God that saves. His “baptism” points to the cross, where he willingly bears God’s judgment in the place of sinners so they can be forgiven and reconciled to God. Because this message is so decisive, the preacher says, Jesus does not only bring comfort but also division, since some receive him and others reject him.
The message urges listeners to read the signs of the times rightly and not remain spiritually blind. Just as people can recognize weather patterns, they are called to recognize who Jesus is and respond while there is still time. The sermon ends with a warm appeal to repent, trust in Christ, and live in reconciliation with God and others, knowing that now is the day of grace.
