The Gospel According to Luke - Luke 19:11-28

5 October 2026

Pastor Brant Van Roekel preaches from Luke 19:11-28, a parable Jesus told while approaching Jerusalem to correct his disciples' expectations about the kingdom of God. The disciples anticipated Jesus would immediately establish an earthly kingdom, but Jesus teaches three essential truths for the journey ahead. First, believers must understand the "already, not yet" tension of Christ's reign—while Jesus rules spiritually through his church today via the Holy Spirit, the full realization of his kingdom remains future when he returns. Second, disciples must work faithfully with all God has entrusted to them, knowing they will give account to Jesus. The parable shows faithful servants rewarded with greater authority, while the servant who hoards his gifts receives rebuke and loss. Third, believers must surrender completely to King Jesus, rejecting the false notion that he is harsh. Van Roekel emphasizes that joy and blessing come not from hoarding resources but from generously using them to bless others for Christ's glory, living with gratitude and looking for opportunities to spread the life of Christ to everyone they encounter.
