The Gospel According to Luke - Luke 2:22-40
12 January 2025
The sermon says Luke 2 helps people correct their expectations about Jesus. Through Simeon and Anna, it shows that Jesus is not an imagined Savior who simply fits human hopes, but the true Savior God has sent. He brings deep comfort by fulfilling God’s promises, bearing God’s salvation for all peoples, and giving peace even in the face of death to those who trust him. The pastor also highlights Mary and Joseph’s humble obedience, urging families to prize spiritual formation and God’s word above lesser priorities.
At the same time, Jesus brings conflict as well as comfort. He exposes hearts, humbles the proud, and his cross means that following him will involve opposition and suffering. Yet this conflict is part of God’s saving work, because Jesus also brings redemption: not only personal forgiveness, but the renewal of lives, communities, and ultimately the whole world. The sermon ends by calling people to trust Jesus, follow him faithfully, and, like Anna, speak with joy about the redemption he has begun.
