The Gospel According to Luke - Luke 5:1-11
10 March 2025
The sermon says that following Jesus is costly, but it is never ultimately a loss. Through Luke’s story of the miraculous catch of fish, the pastor shows that Jesus’ goodness is so abundant and compelling that he draws people to himself, reveals God’s glory through generosity and grace, and becomes worth more than anything people might give up. Peter’s response is the model: faced with Jesus’ holiness and mercy, he sees his own sin, receives Christ’s reassurance, and discovers that surrendering everything to follow him is actually great gain.
The message also urges listeners to trust and obey Jesus even when his words seem strange or costly. Human effort alone often leaves people empty, but obedience to Christ opens the way to his abundance. Jesus not only comforts fearful sinners with “do not be afraid,” but also sends them out on mission, using his people to draw others to him. The sermon invites both Christians and seekers to see Jesus as the true treasure and to build their lives around him.
