The Gospel According to Luke - Luke 6:43-49
5 May 2025
The sermon closes Jesus’ Sermon on the Plain by focusing on two images: trees and their fruit, and houses with different foundations. Its main message is that Jesus uses these pictures to reveal what people often cannot see about themselves. A person’s words and actions show what is really in the heart, and the preacher urges hearers to be honest about the sin, selfishness, and brokenness that surface in everyday life. Rather than leaving people in shame, he points to Jesus as the merciful Savior who forgives, cleanses, and changes people from the inside out.
The sermon also warns that admiring Jesus or speaking warmly about him is not the same as truly following him. Real discipleship is shown by trusting him enough to obey him, even when his teaching feels costly or difficult. A life built on Jesus and his words is compared to a house founded on rock: it can stand through suffering, testing, and judgment. The call is simple and urgent: turn to Christ, receive his grace, and build life on him wholeheartedly.
