This sermon on Psalm 126 says that Christian joy is deeper than good circumstances. It contrasts fragile, circumstance-based happiness with a lasting “joy of faith” rooted in God’s past faithfulness and future promises. Looking back, the psalm invites believers to remember God’s deliverance with gratitude and wonder, especially the greater rescue found in Jesus, who frees people from sin and brings them into new life. The preacher also encourages people to let God redeem painful memories by seeing his grace at work even through sorrow and trauma.
The sermon then turns to hope in the present. Like dry desert streams suddenly filled with water, God can bring renewal where life feels barren. Even when people are sowing in tears through suffering, obedience, and unanswered prayers, they are called to keep trusting God, because he sees, remembers, and will bring a harvest of joy. Through the Holy Spirit and the promise of resurrection, believers can live with confidence that their labor is not wasted and their future is secure in Christ.
