The Psalms of Ascent - Psalm 131

25 August 2025

The sermon reflects on Psalm 131 as a prayer for spiritual maturity and peace with God in an anxious world. It says true peace does not come through striving, self-importance, or trying to control everything, but through humility before God. The pastor explains that pride shows up in inflated views of oneself, envy of what others have, and the insistence on understanding things beyond human limits. In contrast, believers are invited to take their place as creatures before their Creator and to trust his wisdom and care.

It also presents contentment as something learned in relationship with God, using the image of a weaned child resting with its mother. Christians are called to stop frantic self-reliance and instead rest in the faithful love of the Lord. Because God has shown his trustworthiness throughout Scripture and supremely in Jesus’ death and resurrection, the church can hope in him now and forever, growing in prayerful, personal trust day by day.
